Akadama Japanese substrate for bonsai is a clay of volcanic origin , coming from Japan, which is used in the preparation of bonsai substrates .
The Akadama begins to fall apart over time and therefore after a couple of years it is necessary to repot the plants. It is an inert material, brown-yellow in colour, with neutral pH and well endowed with minerals.
Akadama is a superior quality product characterized by high hardness and durability over time, which limits the classic "flaking" of the grain which then causes root asphyxiation of the bonsai.
Akadama does not retain much water, thus allowing greater development of capillary roots and preventing the formation of fungi that cause root rot.
Akadama is undoubtedly the most used natural aggregate in the cultivation of bonsai and can be used as is, as it guarantees perfect drainage with good oxygenation of the substrate , or mixed in variable proportions with pumice, lapilli, vegetable soil and fine gravel , depending on the type of plant we are going to use (broadleaf or conifer) and the geographical area of cultivation.
